Metro Background

Microsoft has a dedicated website for valued ISV partners that wish to be early adopters on particular Microsoft Technologies.  The Metro website covers a small subset of new and emerging technologies and provides resources for ISVs to integrate their applications with these technologies.

You may be familiar with the previous ISV Ascend and Touchdown programs.  These two programs have evolved and the metro program has resulted as a merging of the common goals of these two earlier programs.  The Metro website replaces the old Airframe portal that was used with the older Ascend and Touchdown programs.

Metro includes technical support via newsgroups, training information, and pre-release information for products that have not been launched yet.  Unlike the Connect experience, where the community disolves when a product is RTMed, the Metro program is designed to span from beta and persist long after RTM.  This is because ISVs need to have pre-release information and support throughout the beta programs as well as after RTM to integrate and support their ISV solution on the new technologies.

The Metro service breaks down your engagement with Microsoft into 4 standard phases: Discover, Learn, Develop, and Release.  These phases include all of the activities you will do from initially engaging with your developer evangelist through to your product launch and co-marketing opportunties.

Current Products Covered in Metro

The following products are currently supported in Metro "Tracks":

  1. SQL Server 2008
  2. Windows Server 2008
  3. Visual Studio 2008
  4. Dynamics: CRM 4.0 and AX 5.0
  5. Windows Vista
  6. Web UX: ASP.NET/AJAX, Expression Suite, Silverlight, Windows Live Services
  7. Office System: Office, Sharepoint, Unified Communications

How to Start

The Metro program is for valued partners of Microsoft and requires an invitation to join.  Not all ISVs will be able to join Metro.  If you are interested in joining the Metro program, please contact your Microsoft sponsor or email metrohlp@microsoft.com if you do not have a sponsor.  Once you get an invitation, the signup process is as follows:

1. Log into http://www.discovermetro.net/
You will need to authenticate with your Live ID account to gain access to the Metro website.

2. Profile your application
It is important to profile your application in Metro.  There are a number of internal Microsoft staff that rely on an accurate description of your application profile to identify internal and external marketing opportunities or other Metro services that might be of value to you.  Profiling your application will take about 5 minutes as you fill out a form describing your application, its current stage, and which Microsoft technologies it uses.

3. Enroll in tracks that are of interest for your company
There are a number of tracks in Metro, and each track contains a number of subtracks, depending on the technology.  Simply select the ones that are of interest to you and hit the Register button.  Please note that once you are in Metro, you are not restricted to one technology, nor are you restricted to tracks with technologies specific to your product.  For example, your application may be a desktop application, but you are still free to join the Web UX - Silverlight track if you are interested in learning more about Silverlight.

4. Explore the content, support, forums, and events profiles in the portal.
Each track has different information.  All tracks have support and forums.  There is a lot of very useful information and events in each of the track.  Come back to the site often and review current events and announcements.

My Testimonial

Our company has been very fortunate to work with Microsoft as a close partner and participate in TAP, Touchdown, and Ascend programs.  We have found a lot of value in participating in the Metro events.  We have had the opportunity to visit Building 20 on Microsoft campus for Deep Dive events on emerging technologies as they are still in beta.  We frequently use the support forums on Metro and find solutions faster than on any public or beta forum.  It hasn't cost us anything to use the Metro portal.  The Metro portal has been instrumental in our ability to bring new products to market based on emerging Microsoft products and technologies.  As a result of participating in Metro, we were able to join Microsoft on the Heros Happen {Here} launch event with full support of Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008, and Visual Studio 2008 / .NET 3.5 in our ADXSTUDIO CMS product (see press release).

The Metro program is yet another example that demonstrates Microsoft's strong committment to their partner network.
